Cholesterol

Cholesterol

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a type of fat in your blood. Your body makes most of it (about 85%), and the rest comes from the food you eat. It helps make hormones like estrogen and testosterone and processes vitamin D.

Cholesterol travels through the bloodstream in "packets" called lipoproteins:

  • LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): Often called "bad" cholesterol
  • HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): Known as "good" cholesterol

Another important fat in the body is triglycerides, which store unused energy. High levels of these are also linked to heart problems.

Symptoms of High Cholesterol

High cholesterol usually doesn’t cause obvious symptoms. But over time, it can lead to serious conditions like atherosclerosis (narrowed arteries).

  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Leg pain during activity
  • Blood clots or strokes
  • Heart attack
  • Yellow patches around the eyes (xanthomas)

What Causes High Cholesterol?

  • Poor diet: Too many saturated fats and sugars, found in pastries, processed food, and sugary drinks
  • Lack of exercise: Being inactive lowers HDL and raises LDL
  • Excess weight: Overweight people often have worse cholesterol profiles
  • Smoking: Reduces HDL levels
  • Alcohol: Excess drinking increases LDL and triglycerides

Complications of High Cholesterol

Cholesterol buildup narrows arteries and can lead to:

  • Chest pain
  • Heart attacks
  • Strokes

Normal Cholesterol Levels

  • Optimal: Less than 5 mmol/L
  • Mildly high: 5 to 6.4 mmol/L
  • Moderately high: 6.5 to 7.8 mmol/L
  • Very high: Above 7.8 mmol/L

Doctors also look at LDL, HDL, and triglycerides individually.

Dangers of High Cholesterol

  • Atherosclerosis: Narrowed arteries
  • Heart disease: Poor blood flow to the heart
  • Heart attack: Blood flow to the heart is blocked
  • Angina: Chest discomfort due to low blood supply
  • Stroke: Blood supply to the brain is blocked
