Atherosclerosis is a disorder where plaque buildup and atheromas are caused by irritation to the medium and large artery walls. Atherosclerotic plaques and atheromas start building up in these arteries, causing them to become narrower and decreasing blood flow. All this buildup can become stuck and form a blood clot in the artery, and this is what usually causes heart attacks and strokes. Problems generally associated with atherosclerosis include high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated blood cholesterol and smoking.
2. Peripheral Arterial Disease
Peripheral arterial disease is a condition that is caused when atheromas block the blood flow to such an extent that it causes discomfort, muscular pain, and oxygen deprivation of the tissues. The most common place where symptoms are seen is the legs and feet. It is identified by the skin becoming thin and transparent, with lots of spots that look like bruises and the veins can clearly be seen.
Vasculitis is actually a group of disorders, which are caused by inflammation in the blood vessels. These include:
- Polyarteritis nodosa
- Wegeners granulomatosis
- Henoch-Schnlein purpura
- Giant cell arteritis
- Relapsing polychondritis.
The inflammation usually leads to the blood vessels swelling, reduced blood circulation, tissue damage, and even structural weakness.
The first recommendation is to speak to your doctor, as blocked arteries can be a serious issue. However, you can always start yourself off by adjusting your eating habits to a healthy diet.
